Creative Clay: Empowering Through Art
By Juli Cardamone, SPWC Volunteer and University of Tampa Student
Creative Clay Cultural Arts Center has a mission to “help people with disabilities achieve full and inclusive lives through access to the arts by providing expressive, educational and vocational experiences.” Each week, the center’s primary community arts program works with 50-60 adults diagnosed with developmental, emotional, or physical disabilities. The team of professional artists at Creative Clay also works with children, veterans, and those in institutional settings. Members are mentored, taught, and empowered to become working artists, with an end goal to remove stereotypes around those with disabilities and create community acceptance throughout Pinellas County.
From their headquarters at 1846 1st Avenue South, Creative Clay accepts donations and offers volunteer opportunities for people to help as gallery attendants, thrift sales associates, and studio assistants. Creative Clay’s next community event takes place at 3 Daughters Brewing on Sunday, November 5, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with music, folk art, beer, and fun!
